About Pale Runner

First and foremost, we are storytellers. And we know that you—and your audience—are story experts.

You can sniff out cheesiness or insincerity in a heartbeat. A video lags for a moment and you’re on to the next one.
If a plot twist isn’t any good, you can think of a better one on the spot.

Together, we’ll discover what’s compelling and unique about your story—and we’ll tell it beautifully.

With Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Karlyn Michelson at the helm, Pale Runner Productions creates
documentaries, narratives, and multimedia projects for a wide range of journalism, non-profit, educational,
and corporate clients. Take a look at our client list.

About Karlyn Michelson

Karlyn Michelson is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, multimedia producer, and video journalist. The Village Voice describes her work as ”immediate and vital…a work of shivery intimacy.” John Waters picked Michelson’s feature film debut, Charlie Victor Romeo, as one of the top ten films of 2014.

In 2012, Michelson won a News and Documentary Emmy Award for her work on Time Magazine’s multimedia website Beyond 9/11: Portraits of Resilience, which profiled 40 men and women whose testimonies illuminate the events and aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Her other work for TIME includes a ten-part series on the Bill of Rights, segments on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 2010 midterm elections, Barack Obama’s biography and presidential campaign, and policy reform in Washington D.C.’s school system.

Michelson has also produced stories for MSNBC, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Fortune Magazine, and CNN Money. As the Senior Producer for Complex Media, she oversaw the creative direction, video production, post-production and roll-out for roughly 30 videos every month. Michelson produced television news segments on Islamophobia and the “big three” credit rating agencies for Turkish Public Television’s news magazine The West Side.

Michelson’s first feature film, Charlie Victor Romeo, premiered at Sundance in 2013 and had its commercial debut in January 2014. Derived entirely from the transcripts of real black box recordings, Charlie Victor Romeo uses the hyperreality of 3-D to put the audience in the cockpit of six aviation emergencies.

Karlyn Michelson is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.
